All-Optical Switching On and Off Resonance in a Fiber Filter

Abstract

We report the first experimental demonstration of self-switching of picosecond pulses between linearly polarized states in a polarization-rocking filter fiber. A rocking filter polarization switch1 can be much longer than a polarization switch in a birefringent fiber,2 thus lowering the power required. Also, the input and output polarizations are linear, as opposed to circular for polarization switching in a birefringent fiber. The price of the increased length is wavelength selectivity, and we also investigate the dependence on the operating wavelength.
