Abstract
Lasing on the 4/11/2—4/13/2 transition in Er3+ is of interest both for medical applications1 and for optical communications in heavy metal fluoride glass (HMFG) fibers.2 During recent attempts In our laboratory to obtain lasing at 2.7 μm in Er-doped HMFG fiber, we oberved strong green fluorescence when pumping at either 799 or 647 nm. The question arose as to whether this upconversion would prevent or limit the efficiency of laser action. To characterize quantitatively this effect, the absolute efficiency of upconversion was measured, and the mechanism of upconversion was verified by a combination of spectral and temporal measurements.
