Use of the excimer laser in corneal surgery

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Recent experiments have indicated that corneal tissue ablates readily without charring when exposed to particular energy levels of argon fluoride excimer radiation of 193-nm wavelength. Using a new custom-built beam delivery apparatus incorporating a Questek laser, we have initiated an FDA-approved program of preclinical tests on living animal and human eyes. Our goal is to demonstrate that carefully produced area ablations heal quickly and correctly and that the curvature of the anterior corneal surface can be modified so as to reduce significantly myopia, hyperopia, and/or astigmatism.
