Abstract

Single-frequency semiconductor lasers with electronic tuning are one of the important elements in realizing coherent optical fiber communication.1 Since the electronic tuning is intrinsically fast, the possibility of direct data encoding by frequency modulating (FM) the laser through injection current makes these lasers particularly suitable for FSK systems. However, the simplicity of the FSK modulation should be accompanied by a flat-frequency modulation response which is essential for pattern-independent operation. Three-electrode DFB lasers are suggested and have been proved to give uniform FM response by utilizing the carrier tuning effect in the passive laser waveguide irrespective of its high-absorption coefficient.2
