Abstract

For many applications, including optical time division multiplexed communication systems1 or digital optical switching and logic processing, it is important to be able to amplify ultrashort optical pulses in a semiconductor optical amplifier.2,3 We report here the amplification without distortion of optical pulses as short as 3 ps in a 1.3-μm traveling-wave (TW) optical amplifier.4 The measured gain of the amplifier (lensed fiber input and bulk lens output) is 8 dB, and 1-dB gain compression is observed at an input pulse energy of 0,05 pJ (8-mW peak power).
