Abstract
Two more commonly accessible types of diffuse target for CO2 lidar reflectance measurements are sandblasted aluminum (SBA) and sandpaper. The relationship between the intensity of the scattered wave and the correlation of the diffuse surface is developed by Goodman in Ref. 1. In his development two assumptions are made concerning the characteristics of the rough surfaces. These assumptions are that the surface height variations and the normalizad correlation function of the surface height variations follow a Gaussian distribution. The lack of information on how well sandblasted aluminum and sandpaper obey these assumptions prompted this paper.
