Abstract

High-intensity electron beams can be produced in high-voltage glow discharges. These electron beams have been recently used for the excitation of ion lasers.1,2 The energy distribution, current density, and efficiency of the electron beam are closely dependent on the electric-field distribution in the cathode sheath.
