Abstract
To date, short-pulse generation has been achieved in cw CO2 lasers by active mode locking with poor1 or moderate2 efficiency. We report a simple technique to efficiently convert coherent light to a cw train of nanosecond pulses. A typical experimental setup is analyzed, and an alternative scheme is proposed for ultimate pulse-narrowing and higher-power operation. Performances obtained with a cw CO2 laser are presented.
