Raman effects on solitons near the zero group dispersion point

Abstract

Recently,1 we proposed the use of solitons at the zero group dispersion point of a single-mode optical fiber for long-haul communication, a scheme that combines the low-power requirement of propagation at the zero group dispersion point with the robustness of the soliton approach. We had also shown that the variation of the zero group dispersion point, which arises due to fluctuation of fiber parameters, such as core size, had a negligible effect when the correlation length is short.2 However, to implement successfully this scheme, other issues such as the Raman self-frequency shift3 and the Raman amplification4 have to be clarified.
