Millisecond response time in BaTiO3 at 1 W/cm2

Abstract

The photorefractive performance of BaTiO3 has been limited so far by a relatively long response time, in the 0.1-1.0-s range at 1 W/cm2, while for many applications response times of 1 ms or less are required. We present evidence from two- wave mixing experiments for response times below 10 ms and, for selected crystals, below 1 ms at 1 W/cm2. These fast response times have been achieved with various BaTiO3 crystals grown at Hughes or at Sanders and heated to ~120°C.
