Fermi edge singularity in absorption spectra of modulation-doped quantum wells

Abstract

Excitonic absorption peaks in undoped quantum-well structures have been extensively investigated for their linear, nonlinear, and electrooptical properties.1 They are relatively well understood and have implications for various optical and optoelectronic devices. Recently, it has become apparent that electrtical control of carrier densities in modulation-doped quantum wells (MDQWs) may also have interesting applications, as in optical probing of field effect transistors.2 The presence of moderate electron densities can have substantial effects on the optical absorption spectra, and it is consequently important to understand the underlying mechanisms.
