Abstract
We review recent work on the use of rf discharges in the excitation of gas lasers. Basic rf discharge properties are seen to play a crucial role in diffusion-cooled lasers, particularly in the context of stability under high-power loading, switching, parameter optimization, and compatibility with novel resonator formats.
