High-frequency Fabry-Perot modulator

Abstract

The technique of frequency-modulation spectroscopy has allowed optical absorption measurements of unprecedented sensitivity. For many applications of this technique, however, one needs a high-modulation index at microwave frequencies. Recent advances in modulator technology have achieved this using LiTaO3 as a modulator material. This material works well In the visible portion of the spectrum but is opaque in the UV. Modulator materials which are transparent in the visible, such as KDP, are less efficient and require unacceptably large amounts of drive power to achieve a satisfactory modulation Index. We enhance the efficiency of the frequency-modulation by placing a high-frequency KDP modulator Inside a resonant Fabry-Perot cavity.
