Abstract
Coherent optical communication systems are expected to perform better than direct detection systems due to their higher receiver sensitivity and frequency selectivity.1 However, in coherent communication systems, the frequencies of the transmitter and local oscillator lasers must be matched within a few gigahertz. This requires knowledge of the precise transmitter frequency at the distant receiver, which is difficult in practice. We report a novel system which can overcome this problem by utilizing lasers frequency-locked to an absolute reference as transmitters and local oscillators.2
