Abstract

Recent theories and experiments have pointed out the important role played by side diffraction In the amplification of a probe beam.1,2 In a Kerrlike medium, the coupling of the diffraction with the pump beam provides a mechanism for the amplification of the probe beam. In a photorefractive material, the phase shift associated with this coupling affects both the magnitude and direction of the natural phase shift of the system response, leading to profound changes in the optimal wave mixing conditions.
