Abstract
The interaction of intense pulsed laser radiation with solid surfaces is usually accompanied by macroscopic damage. In many cases, as for wide bandgap materials, the initial energy absorption mechanism leading to surface damage is still an open question. Possibilities are multiphoton absorption bridging the bandgap1 and avalanche breakdown.2
