Abstract

Spectral linewidth of distributed feedback (DFB) lasers has been intensively studied theoretically1 and experimentally.2,3 Short wavelength (0.7–0.9-μm) narrow linewidth DFB lasers are important for interferometric optical measurements. It was predicted theoretically4 that multiple quantum well (MQW) structures narrow the linewidth, and we first demonstrated3 that the linewidth of MQW DFB lasers is several times smaller than that of bulk DFB lasers. We report a linewidth as narrow as 1.5 MHz, which was realized by the combined effects of an MQW structure, long cavity, and small confinement factor.
