Abstract

Doping of rare earths in the core has provided silica based single-mode optical fibers with new functions as active devices with stimulated emission.1 Rare earth doped fibers have found successful uses for fiber lasers, fiber amplifiers, and fiber sensors. Recent studies have revealed the advantages of Er3+ doped single-mode fibers as optical sources and amplifiers for optical communications and even the potential for soliton communications.
