Abstract
Excimer lasers are expected to have important applications in medical disciplines because pulsed UV laser ablation allows discrete removal of targeted material with minimal thermal damage. In ophthalmology excimer laser photoablation is being investigated as a means of reshaping the corneal surface of the eye and correcting for vision defects. The ablation phenomenon must be well understood so that excimer laser radiation may be used safely to remove tissue with predictable results. Recently a theoretical model has been introduced which can accurately describe the observed excimer ablation behavior for a variety of synthetic polymers as well as tissues.1
