Abstract

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), an experimental treatment of localized malignant disease, consists of two steps: (1) the systemic administration of a photosensitizer which is preferentially retained in tumors and (2) the delivery of light, which, when absorbed by the photosensitizer, initiates chemical reaction resulting in cell necrosis and tumor destruction.
