Efficient near infrared optical parametric oscillator in KTP

Abstract

All solid state lasers, as evidenced by the increasing success of diode pumped lasers, have numerous advantages over lamp pumped designs in terms of size, efficiency, and simplicity. However, the available wavelengths of these devices are limited primarily to those of rare earth-host systems (Nd,Tm,Ho,Er), as present high power laser diodes are best matched to the optical peak absorption of these materials. It is thus desirable to increase the spectrum accessible by diode pumped lasers while maintaining the advantages inherent in an all solid state design. We present the frequency downconversion of a diode pumped Nd:YAG to the important eye-safe region of 1.5 µm using KTP in an optical parametric oscillator configuration.
