Polarization Self-Modulation in External-Cavity Semiconductor Lasers

Abstract

We report the observation of polarization self-modulation (PSM) in external-cavity semiconductor lasers. When a quarter wave retardation plate is inserted in a linear laser cavity, or a half wave plate in a ring laser cavity, the lasing field repetitively switches between the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations at a rate determined by the cavity length. The speed is not limited by the relaxation oscillation frequency (fro), so this technique can be used for generating ultra-high frequency modulation in semiconductor lasers.
