Absorption losses in Nd:YAG by stable color centers

Abstract

Stable color centers are produced in Nd:YAG by the UV parts of the pumping light. Their absorption continuum has been investigated by Brass et al.1 in the spectral range from 300 to 600 nm. Mori2 explains this absorption continuum, which reduces the pumping efficiency and increases the thermal loading of the laser crystal with three overlapping absorption bands peaked at 312, 403, and 543 nm. Our measurement of the spectral distribution (Fig. 1) shows that the color center absorption extends up to 1300 nm and leads to noticeable losses of the laser light at 1064 nm. These color center produced losses depend on the pumping light spectra. Their absorption coefficient can rise to 3×10−3 cm−1 if the laser rod has been pumped with unfiltered (Schott Duran-glas flow tubes) Xe are lamps and current densities of >5 KA/cm2.
