Ultrahigh spatial frequency grating by the double mask method

Abstract

An ultrahigh spatial frequency grating, whose period is smaller than half the size of the incident light wavelength, shows no diffracted-order light or birefringence.1 The birefringent grating has many attractive uses, such as wave plates,2 polarization beam splitters,3 polarizers, and antireflective coatings.4 The primary advantages of the ultrahigh spatial grating is its light weight, low cost, and ease of reproduction by photopolymerization. No suitable fabrication method for the ultraspatial frequency gratings, however, has yet been reported because of their submicron order periodicity and greater thickness relative to their period.
