Abstract

An optical directional coupler filter in In1-xGaxASyP1-y/InP, designed with a 15-Å bandwidth at device length L = 5 mm, has been investigated theoretically, and bandwidth ΔλBW = 220 Å at L = 1.9 mm has been demonstrated experimentally by Broberg et al.1 Their work established a proof of principle for this synchronous filter, but their use of slab waveguides is not appropriate for use in a communication system. With the advances in fiber optic technology, there is a great demand for narrowband filters to multiplex and demultiplex tens of wavelength channels with a wavelength bandwidth of ~10 Å or less.
