Measurement of group delay with high temporal and spectral resolution

Abstract

Dispersive optical systems can be used to compress chirped optical pulses. This is because different spectral components of the pulse accumulate different phases φ(ω) as they propagate through the system. To compensate properly the phase distortion in an optical pulse, it is helpful to be able to measure directly the dispersion of an optical element, so that its effect on the pulse may be correctly accounted for. The more accurately the dispersion can be measured, the more accurate its effect on the pulse can be determined. We have devised a method to measure the group delay through a dispersive optical system with an accuracy of ±0.1 fs and a spectral resolution of 1 Å.
