Abstract

Laser diode (LD) gates are promising for the construction of a lossless optical switching network, because the inherent branching loss and also the propagation loss in a gate type switching network1,2 can be compensated by the amplification characteristics of the LD gate. We describe here what we believe to be the first successful fabrication of a compact lossless 1×4 LD optical gate switch.
