Optical limiting by soliton intensity dependent polarization rotation

Abstract

We show both experimentally and numerically that a fundamental soliton pulse propagating in a birefringent fiber undergoes intensity dependent polarization rotation as a unit. We utilize this property of solitons to make an ultrafast all-optical limiter (i.e., a device whose transmission saturates at some intensity) in a standard singlemode fiber followed by a polarizer.
