Optical switching in photorefractive cadmium telluride using the optically controlled nonuniform electric field distribution

Abstract

We report on a novel optical switching mechanism with a latch-type response and fast submicrosecond erasure capability. This effect is highly sensitive and a control beam of 10-100-μW/cm2 intensity at 800-900 nm is sufficient to change the switching state. Results concerning the integration of a 1-D opto-optical switching array, its resolution, speed, and switching energy are presented.
