Abstract

A continuous wave (cw) laser output of ~10 W was achieved using the iodide n-C6F13I as a gain medium. To our knowledge, this is the first report of cw laser operation with n-C6F13I. The laser system consisted of a 40-kW solar-simulating argon, arc, a 20-mm diam laser quartz tube, and cavity mirrors. The pumping length was 0.15 m on the focal line of an elliptical trough reflector. The solar simulator irradiance on the inside wall of the laser tube could be varied up to 1300 solar constants1 (1 S.C. = 1.35 kW/m2) by varying the arc current.
