Abstract
The instabilities which can occur in intracavity doubled Nd:YAG lasers are well known. Amplitude fluctuations, caused by the nonlinear interaction of sum generation and spatial hole burning, are often observed as noise at kilohertz frequencies.1 Suppressing these fluctuations will clearly involve controlling the underlying nonlinearities. Only limited control of sum generation is possible; it has been observed that with polarization control, the summing of orthogonally polarized modes can be eliminated.2
