Anomalous spectral shifts of femtosecond pulses in the collisional strong field ionization regime

Abstract

We recently demonstrated blue shifting of visible high energy femtosecond pulses due to the creation of an ionization breakdown plasma on an ultrafast time scale.1 Computer modeling of this effect utilizing a Drude plasma generated during the light pulse by a Keldysh ionization process has yielded results in very good agreement with our experimental findings. However, we also observed anomalously large blue shifting in certain gases at higher pressures and red shifting of probe pulses at times after the initial ionizing pulse, neither of which is explained by our Keldysh model.
