All-fiber passively mode-locked soliton laser

Abstract

With the recent emphasis on high bit rate communication, erbium doped amplifiers, and soliton transmission systems, there is a current need for a reliable fiber compatible source of solitons capable of high repetition rate operation. The laser presented here is representative of an entire family of lasers which could be constructed on the same basic principle. The laset uses a nonlinear Sagnac interferometer as a nonlinear mirror to provide passive mode-locking. With the proper relation between the wavelength and the dispersion of the cavity, the laser will spontaneously produce solitons.
