Abstract

Generation of ultrashort pulses from erbium doped fiber lasers has been of interest in recent years due to operation at 1.5 μm, in the low loss window of optical fibers and the possibility of soliton pulse propagation.1-3 We are reporting on the generation of 0.9 ps pulses directly from an erbium doped fiber laser. These pulses sit on a low-intensity background which can be eliminated by suitable adjustment of the intra-cavity dispersion.
