Spectroscopic applications of a tunable, injection-seeded β-barium borate optical parametric oscillator

Abstract

Optical parametric oscillator (OPO) devices have long shown promise as a versatile source of tunable coherent radiation for infrared spectroscopy, molecular state preparation, laser photochemistry, and nonlinear optical measurements. However, the potential of OPOs has at times been frustrated by spectral bandwidth limitations, low optical damage thresholds, and complicated wavelength control methods. Two recent developments have led to a marked improvement in the performance and reliability of OPOs: the availability of injection-seeded single-mode pump laser sources and of new non-linear optical materials, such as β-barium borate (BBO).1
