Femtosecond pulse amplification by a XeF(C→A) excimer system

Abstract

The XeF(C→A) excimer is a novel femtosecond- gain medium for high-peak-power generation.1 Having a gain bandwidth and an energy saturation density one order of magnitude larger than B→X excimer gain media, the C→A transition has the potential for efficient, direct, ultrashort pulse amplification. For successful implementation, a complete characterization of the amplifier parameters is required. In this paper we report on gain and energy saturation density measurements for a wide range of pulse durations and blue-green wavelengths. We present energy extraction results, using a specially designed unstable resonator. All measurements were performed by using a short pulse (10 ns) electron-beam-pumped excimer system with an active volume of 0.51.2 A synchronously pumped, hybridly mode-locked dye laser system was used as a tunable injection source.3
