Abstract

The amplification characteristics of semiconductor laser amplifiers are strongly affected by carrier-induced changes in the refractive index governed by the linewidth enhancement factor. Considerable spectral changes have been observed1,2 as a result of self-phase modulation occurring when the amplifier operates in the saturation regime. The frequency chirp imposed on the amplified pulse can be beneficial to optical communication systems because the amplified pulse is compressed during transmission through the optical fiber.3,4
