A simple femtosecond optical third-order disperser

Abstract

We present a simple optical device, based on the grating and lens femtosecond pulse shaper,1 that provides adjustable third order dispersion filtering of femtosecond optical pulses. A desired magnitude of third order dispersion, β‴ = ∂3ϕ/∂ω3, is simply "dialed in" by slightly bending a flat mirror placed at the filter plane of a femtosecond pulse shaper. Since the magnitude of both the second and third order terms are independently adjustable, this compensator will be useful for femtosecond pulse compression, stretched pulse amplification, fiber propagation, or wherever higher order dispersion is encountered, such as in modelocking of semiconductor lasers.2
