Characterizing the optical plasma mirror method of prepulse suppression for intense ultrashort laser pulses

Abstract

The use of intense, ultrashort laser pulses for many experiments depends critically on adequate reduction of pedestal energy, particularly the prepulse portion, because a small fraction of the total pulse energy in the prepulse can represent a significantly large absolute energy for intense pulses. The optical-plasma-mirror concept is a high-frequency extension of the well-developed reflective plasma switching demonstrated in the microwave regime at this laboratory.1
