Talbot filtering for modal discrimination: modeling and fabrication

Abstract

Talbot plane re-imaging may be used to control the lateral modes in grating-surface-emitting phased array lasers1 in which the lateral coupling is produced by evanescent and/or diffractive coupling, and the longitudinal coupling is achieved through mutual injection coupling. The Talbot filtering technique relies on the diffractive self-imaging properties of a periodic array of emitters, in particular the modal dependence of the self-imaged pattern.
