Induced focusing and spatial wave breaking due to cross-phase modulation

Abstract

Recent theoretical results have shown that cross-phase modulation (XPM) between a strong pump beam and a weak probe can induce focusing of the probe beam when the two beams copropagate through a self-defocusing medium.1 We have confirmed by experiment that XPM can not only induce focusing, but can also cause the focused probe to deflect and to exhibit the spatial analog of optical wave-breaking. A schematic illustration of the experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1.
