Continuous optical beam steering with an AlGaAs integrated phased array

Abstract

For optical interconnects, spatial switching arrangements appear very promising. We recently demonstrated an electro-optic digital spatial light deflector consisting of a grating output coupler integrated on an array of uncoupled rib waveguides (Fig. 1).1 The phase gradient in the waveguide layer was obtained by applying an electric field with a sawtooth-shaped electrode. The angular deflection was +9 mrad for a lobe width of 1.8 mrad FWHM.
