Abstract

The potential improvement in speed of parallel optical processing as compared to serial processing with digital computers has been a driving force for the development of optical systems. In this paper both techniques will be compared. An optical correlator as shown in Fig. 1 for fast parallel transparency analysis in particle image velocimetry (PIV) has been set up. The input transparency to the PIV system is a double exposure photograph of a particle flow.
