Abstract

We have recently quantitatively explained some polarization phenomena found in a single-mode quasi-isotropic laser when the frequency is scanned across the emission line.1,2 Polarization flips, hysteresis domains, and curious discontinuities (polarization catastrophes) have been observed and are predicted by our model. These effects are observable in quasi-isotropic lasers where the anisotropies may be of the order of 10-4 or less, i.e., a size having values not easily measured by the usual direct techniques.
