Abstract
One of the major problems of highpower transverse flow CO2 lasers is quality of the beam extracted from a highly inhomogeneous active medium. Different types of unstable resonator configuration have been recently proposed to increase the focusability of the beam obtained by this type of laser.1-3 Here we report on the characteristics of the beam produced by a self-filtering unstable resonator (SFUR)4-5 and on the penetration tests performed at different power levels on standard stainless steel samples.
