Abstract
The 2-μm Tm+3(2F4-3H6) laser is of considerable interest because of its high efficiency and amenability to pumping by diode lasers.1,2 Prior to this work the host materials for this laser have been limited to the garnets and LiYF4. We have recently demonstrated a Tm+3(3F4-3H6) laser in the new host crystal YVO4-. The Tm:YVO4 laser operates on a cw basis efficiently at room temperature, and is characterized by a broad bandwidth and a large absorption cross section for the 800-nm pump band.
