Picosecond square pulse generation using a nonlinear fiber loop mirror

Abstract

Over the past few years, the nonlinear fiber loop mirror has been successfully introduced as a switching element for both soliton and nonsoliton pulses in various geometries.1,2 For nonsoliton pulses, intensity dependent switching in most cases gives rise to fragmentation of the switched pulse. However, square pulses do not exhibit this characteristic and consequently are preferential for some uses. Here we describe a simple technique, based on a nonlinear fiber loop mirror which can generate square pulses from cw inputs, driven by a picosecond pulse derived from a Nd:YAG laser. In addition, through modification of the dispersion properties of the nonlinear loop, shaped pulses can be generated.
