Upconversion in Er-doped silica fiber pumped by laser diode

Abstract

Upconversion is an efficient way for the development of visible sources pumped in the near infrared. Recently, we have observed fairly intense green light in both Er-doped and Er/Yb-doped single-mode silica fiber pumped by laser diode (LD). The wavelength of pumped light is 0.8 μm. When the pumped light is launched into the fiber from one end, the Er3+ ions were pumped into the 4I9/2 energy level (see Fig. 1), then decayed to the metastable state 4I13/2· The Er3+ ions at the state
