Phase effects of graded reflectivity mirrors

Abstract

Unstable resonators with a graded reflectivity mirror (GRM) acting as the output coupler are now widely used. They allow the production of a large fundamental mode while minimizing detrimental diffraction effects. These resonators have been studied extensively during the last few years; however, an aspect which has received little attention is the influence of the phase response of the GRM on the performance of the resonator. The most commonly used GRMs are made by depositing a profiled dielectric layer on an otherwise transparent substrate, This layer introduces phase front alterations both in reflection and in transmission. We discuss the influence of the GRM phase response both on the in-cavity field and on the output beam.
