Abstract

Millimeter-wave devices emitting radiation perpendicular to their surface by using optically induced gratings are demonstrated. These devices, called millimeter wave grating surface emitters1 (MMWGSE) use silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) technology for efficient operation. SOS dielectric waveguides combine the low- loss characteristics of sapphire with the efficient optical absorption of silicon.
